What If Cybersecurity Was a Lion?
What if there were a lion standing at your website’s entrance and monitoring all activities going on inside of it?
The lion would act as an extremely cautious guard making sure everything that happens on your website is safe for you.
If everything looks fine, it would do nothing and just let visitors go on their way.
However, once any hacker tries to get into your website, that’s when the lion will reveal itself as a real digital king of the jungle.
The Lion Protects the Website
Your website could be considered a kingdom in the world of Internet, where thousands of people could come to visit it daily. Not everyone would come here with a good intention, though.
At the gate of your website, the cybersecurity lion would be sitting and checking each and every person trying to enter.
A harmless visitor approaches.
The lion quickly checks him and says:
“All clear. You may enter.”
Then something suspicious appears on your website.
The lion raises its head.
Something seems odd.
The lion immediately blocks the attempt to enter.
The Hackers Would be in Trouble
Often hackers try various methods to gain access to a website or steal information or even harm it in some way.
Our cyber lion would not just stand around as they wander through the digital kingdom.
One hacker is trying to guess a password.
The lion notices.
Another suspicious attempt appears.
The lion also notices this one.
An attempt to deliver dangerous code towards the website.
Lion starts paying even more attention.
And at that point, a hacker may notice:
“This website is not an easy one to hack.”
If the Lion Finds a Threat
A good system of security always checks for anything unusual.
This lion would do exactly this thing.
- If someone starts making many login attempts all of a sudden, the lion will pay attention to this person.
- If a suspicious device attempts to get access to sensitive data, the lion will check it out.
- If someone tries to take advantage of a website’s weakness, the lion will act immediately.
Without any fuss.
Just one simple phrase:
“Not today.”
The Lion Does Not Sleep
It is funny how our lion does not sleep at all.
When website owners are sleeping, the lion is still awake.
- At midnight, the lion is awake.
- At 3 AM, the lion is awake.
- Even when nobody visits the website, the lion is still awake.
The thing is, cyberattacks do not happen only during business hours.
The attacker will not say to himself:
“It's 5 PM. I'll come tomorrow.”
This is the reason why continuous monitoring is essential in cybersecurity.
Good Passwords Equal a Good Gate
Even a strong lion needs a strong gate.
In terms of a website, it means that passwords and logins should be strong enough.
A weak password will mean opening the gates of the kingdom and putting a small sign "Please, do not enter".
It seems like the lion will be quite disappointed.
Strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, updates, hosting, backups, and monitoring help build better security.
The lion will protect the entrance but the whole kingdom needs to be protected too.
What If the Lion Gets Distracted?
Let us imagine that the lion notices a butterfly that flies past.
The lion gets distracted from its duty for a couple of seconds.
In this case, a hacker will try to get through the other side.
That is the reason why there should not be only one way to provide protection for a website.
Website protection involves various security measures, which decrease the chances of a breach.
The firewall, malware detection, access control, encryption, security patches, backups, and other measures can be used.
One could compare it to several lions guarding different places in the kingdom.
The Kingdom Requires a Protector
Nowadays, websites store much more information than plain text.
A website can keep information about customers, accounts, passwords, orders, messages, payment information, and many other pieces of information.
As you can see, cybersecurity plays an essential role in maintaining websites.
Thus, if we consider cybersecurity as a lion, it does not protect only the website.
It protects the whole kingdom that exists on the Internet.
